What Is A Rapala Knot?

It seems like everyone who fishes has their own favorite fishing knot to use when attaching line to hooks, lures and swivels. It is important to know which knot you should use for the specific lure or hook that you are using. Not all knots are created equal--some will hold your weight better than others while some knots slip easily and don't hold as well. The Rapala Knot is one of the preferred b ounding knots for many anglers and is an excellent choice if you want a knot that holds and does not slip.

How To Tie A Rapala Knot:

The Rapala Knot has been designed to provide you with the ability to attach your fishing line to your hook, lure or swivel and still allow for a quick release.

Rapala Knot Instructions:

After you have made your connection to the hook, lure or swivel, the next step is to take your free end of line and make five or six wraps around the standing line.

*Note: You can also start this knot (described below) by making a loop similar to the one shown in the video--the key is to hold that loop open with your thumb while you do everything else. Then, when you release the loop and tighten the knot, that open loop will disappear and your hook, lure or swivel will be locked in place.

Once you have made 5-6 wraps around the standing part of your line with the tag end, make a half hitch (if you do not know how to tie a half hitch click here). Make sure to leave a loop on the top side of the wraps.

Next, make another half hitch around all five or six wraps you made (the loop that is on the bottom will pull through this time). Again make sure to leave a loop on the top side of your new knot. Slip your hook, lure or swivel into that loop and release the wraps. Pull on both ends of your line and tighten down the knot. Clip off any excess line and you are ready to fish!
