Perfect Bait For Yellowfin Tuna
The Yellowfin Tuna (Thunnus albacares) is a pelagic fish of the mackerel family, Scombridae. The Atlantic population of this species is commonly known as "Turkey" but its common name in most other languages refers to the fish's colouration. They are found widely throughout the tropical and temperate regions of the Atlantic Ocean including the Mediterranean Sea, Iberian Peninsula, Canary Islands, Madeira Archipelago, Bermuda and Bahamas. They are also found in large quantities around South Pacific islands such as Tonga and French Polynesia where they're know locally as "ahi."
The Yellowfin can grow to nearly six feet and one hundred and eighty pounds, but this is rare. Fish caught average 2-3 feet in length and 40lbs. They are easily identified by their striking "yellow" dorsal fin which gives the fish its common name. The first dorsal appears to be small, but it's attached to a muscle that can propel the fish forward at amazing speeds...speeds of up to fifty miles per hour have been measured! The fish are often found in schools near the surface.
Many anglers consider this species to be the toughest fighter of all the Pacific gamefish. Yet because they are so fast and powerful, many strikes are missed by novice or "rusty" anglers. They're strong enough to pull a skiff around when hooked. They have been reported to leap from the water when hooked and even snap fishing lines in half with their razor sharp teeth!
In the waters around the Carolinas, they are considered a nuisance because their feeding activity often spooks baitfish into clumping at the surface. This deprives anglers of a "feeding opportunity" and forces them to "chase" these baitfish into deeper water where big gamefish lurk. Tuna are caught mostly on live baits, but they will also strike lures and cut baits. They can be extremely difficult to hook by spinning gear, but the action is incredible when they're hooked!
Their propensity for feeding close to the surface makes them an excellent gamefish for both boat and shore-bound anglers.
