How To Choose Fishing Reel For Jack Crevalle
I'm going to be sharing with you some information on how to choose the right fishing reel for jack crevalles and discuss how I made my decision. I hope this helps answer your questions and gets you closer to finding that perfect fishing reel.
First of all, not all big game reels are suited for catching Jack Crevalle. You may have heard of other articles that recommend you should use a reel having 50lb line capacity, but the truth is, I'm not used to this way of thinking.
The other day I went fishing with my friend who owns the boat and he was using a 250 size Shimano Tekota. He has been using this for years so I was curious as to why he chose this reel for monster jack.
I tried using the same reel and it worked well, so I asked him his reasoning. He said that "It's not about how big your fishing reel is, but the line capacity of the level wind". Due to my lack of knowledge on this subject at that time, I thought this was a fair enough explanation.
The more I did some research on line capacity, the more I realised that it wasn't as simple as adding up all of your lines and choosing a reel that had more than that number. Taking the Tekota 250 for example, from Shimano's website it says that you can have up to 55lb line capacity for long lining (probaly because it's a multiplier reel). However, you can only use the 30lb line in the level wind; if you tried to put in 55lb line in the level wind, there would be no point in having that feature.
This is why when choosing fishing reels for jacks, I look at the level wind. Are you planning to fish mostly with long lines? Are you planning to use 100lb line or more in the level wind? This is what I look for when choosing a reel these days.
Jacks are powerful and will put up quite a fight. The drag needs to be able to stop them from running away with your line, otherwise it'll be very difficult to win the fight. Shimano's low profile Mg range is well known for having a lot of power and stopping power in general. The Magforce Z drag system allows you to put way more tension on your line than other reels whilst maintaining smoothness and durability. I would say the best choice for fishing with 100lb or heavier line would be the Shimano Magforce Z Mg range.
If you're planning to fish mostly with 50lb line, then any reel will work for you. You can use the multiplier reels like the Daiwa Tatula or one of Shimano's big game reels. I hope this article has been helpful and answered some of your questions. As you can see, it's not as straightforward as just choosing the biggest fishing reel with the most line capacity. It is also worth considering if you want to use lighter lines like 50lb or 80lb.
